Cuckoo in the Coconut

A common phrase around our house is cuckoo in the coconut.  Crazy, nuts, loony, loco....all the same as cuckoo in the coconut.   Sadly, this post has nothing to do with coconuts (too bad because I love them), but it does have to do with cuckoos....or a cuckoo clock to be exact.

I picked up this cuckoo clock at the Salvation Army a while back for $6.99.  I stared at it and stared at in the store and couldn't decide if I 'needed' it or not.  Fin was sleeping in the car and I actually went back to the car without it, and then told Mr. Swell all about it.  He got out of the car, went into the Salvation Army and bought the clock. I guess he knew I needed a cuckoo clock??? I think he really just didn't want to hear me say that I should have bought it and passed up a good thing, blah, blah, blah.

It really was quite hideous.  I showed it to my Mom, who thought I had lost my mind.  I stood my ground though....I was sure it was going to be great in the end.

I took the clock hands off (the clock still worked and it even came with a battery - score!) and gave them a coat of black spray paint.  The spray paint didn't cover very well at the edges of the hands - it didn't want to stick.  After the paint dried though, I decided I liked it.  The hands were black, but the edges stayed gold.  Couldn't have achieved that look even if I had tried.

The clock originally had some lovely ceramic pine cones hanging from it that I removed (sorry, no pic of that awesomeness).  I did remember to take a picture of the back though.  This bad boy is courtesy of 1975.

I washed the ceramic and then gave it a couple coats of yellow spray paint (Painter's Touch Sun Yellow).

Then I reattached the hands (thankfully the clock still worked after all of the spray painting action).

And hung it on the wall above the new open shelves in the kitchen.

My Mom was impressed by the way....she said it wasn't ugly any more.
