We were in a deep freeze around here last week. I know, living in Alberta I should be used to the cold, but every time it plunges below -30C, I am still in shock. Needless to say, when it gets that cold outside, our furnace runs and runs, and sucks whatever small amount of moisture that might be in our skin right out. Poor Fin has such sensitive skin and the winters wreak havoc on it. We've tried all sorts of creams and concoctions, but the one that seems to be working the best is one that I made in our kitchen.
It doesn't get any easier than this. Plop a couple giant spoonfuls of organic coconut oil (I get mine at Bulk Barn) into your mixer. Add a bit of Vitamin E oil. I couldn't find liquid Vitamin E, so I just broke open about 5 Vitamin E capsules from the drug store. Turn your mixer on and whip it until it's nice and fluffy, which will take about 5 minutes. I used my Kitchen Aid stand mixer with the whisk attachment, but I am sure you could also use a hand mixer.
Then slather it on! I keep it in a tupperware in Fin's room and just smoosh it all over her each night before she goes to bed. I also use it on my hands and my lips. It's amazing stuff....and it smells so good and coconutty. When it's -30 you can just close your eyes, let your skin soak in the moisture and imagine you are on a beach somewhere drinking a fancy coconut drink.
