And You, And You, And You.....

Do you remember when Oprah gave away cars?  You get a car, you get a car, you get a car, etc, etc, etc.  It's infamous.  And just in case you haven't seen (or if you need a good laugh), here's a remix of the moment along with a little rapping.

And no, unfortunately I am not giving away cars!  I wish.  But, over the last couple of weeks I have felt like Oprah in reverse.  You get my money, you get my money, you get my money....

Seriously, I feel like I should just pile it up in nice little stacks of bills and then throw it up into the air and let it float down so that everyone around me can grab some.  (ok, I might be exaggerating....just a little).

But in all seriousness......

I am a saver.  A real saver.  I love seeing the number in the bank account go up...not down.  I need a big safety net to feel ok about things.  Blame it on my worry wart personality.  And you know what? Selling 2 houses and buying another is freaking expensive!!!!

We aren't rich...we are 2 people who have good jobs and live comfortably.  We save, we budget, we don't (usually) spend frivolously, we research before we buy, we sleep on big purchases and we pay off our credit card bill every month.  I know this is what we save up for, but my goodness it's a bit of a shock when you actually have to SPEND the savings!

Before we could sell our house we needed a new Real Property Report ($500), and then the compliance from the county ($150), and a final inspection on the electrical in the basement ($150 and a really long story!!).  In the new house we need a washer and dryer, a gas line for the oven, a new furnace, and new toilets.  We are also doing all new flooring and have decided to move some walls.  Don't get me wrong, it's all money well spent and it's all money we saved up and planned on spending, but SHIZA!!!

I think I am going through major shock.  Does anyone else get night sweats about money flying out the door?  I wish Oprah was still on the air....maybe I could have had a ticket to her show and recouped some of my losses.  :)

I'll be done ranting and will be back with a floor plan of the new house later this week (using a free...free...website that I love).

  1. Oh I hear you!

Little things here and there don't bother me so much, but making large purchases (even when prepared and necessary) just make me feel ill.

I'd much rather save, save, save. Just call me Scrooge!

  3. I feel your pain. It cost us $150 to turn off our gas. $100 to turn on the water at the new place. $80 to test the sprinklers. Everybody wants something! Our mortgage payment is on the 16th of the month...and we closed on the 17th. So, we paid mortgage and apt. rent both in June. In some cases, we are getting overpayment checks back now, but for a while, it felt like it was flying out the window!

    1. Yikes! That's it...everybody wants something! I didn't even add the fact that we had to have a home inspection on the new house and an exterminator come and do an inspection (we suspected mice!). I hope it all calms down for you too!

  4. I feel you! I save and save and know what I am saving for but when I go to use the money for exactly what I was saving for, it hurts a little inside!

    1. Yes! That's exactly it. For years you know exactly what you are saving for and it feels so good to see that number grow...and then you have to spend it. CRAP!!! It's all good in the end but man it's tough while it's happening.

  6. That stuff is what scared me away from buying another home every single time. And don't feel bad about ranting, I love to hear it because then I know that I'm not the only one ;)

  7. I love spending money. It seems to cause me no trouble at all. My husband would be in the fetal position on the floor. It's nice to have relationship balance that way!

  8. We're about to be handing over the money with our basement waterproofing, then radiant heat, then concrete, then, then, then... I can totally relate right about now. ;)

  9. First of all, I've never seen that Oprah clip, so thank you very much for introducing me to it! Second of all, I'm totally with you right now. I recently decided to spend some savings and am so upset to see my bank account dwindling. Which I know is the point of having savings and deciding to spend those savings, but I also like a very large safety net and pay my credit card off in full. So I hear you! I can totally relate!! Hang tough! The account will re-inflate (or so I tell myself EVERY morning!!).

    1. Stacey - I can't believe you hadn't seen that Oprah clip before (even without the rap). It's pretty funny isn't it? Ok, well we can freak out together!!! And yes, it will re-inflate (although it might be a while for us! Yikes.)

  10. Oh man...I so feel you. I have always had that magic number in my head and when our account hits it, I also start to freak out. You are not alone, my friend, but I know in the end you all will be in an even better place and happier you didn't let that fear take over or rule your life! I cannot wait to see this floor plan! Excited for you! :D

    1. I am so glad that I am not alone! That's so true...when our account hit that big number I freaked out then too. It felt so good, but because I am a worrying I figured we should be doing something more productive with it than just letting it sit in the bank. Ha! Floor plan comin' up.....
