Ready? Ok!
Let's take a little walk down memory lane, shall we?
I apologize ahead of time for some of these pics, but you will at least get the idea. My old camera didn't love dark spaces and I have yet to invest in a tripod so that I can leave my shutter open for longer.
This is how the hallway looked when we first took possession:
Ugly green and mismatched casing. It was bad.
Then we opened up the doorway to the 4th bedroom to make more of a loft area.
Then I stared at paint swatches for a while. Can you tell the difference between the 2 colours? Ya, neither could I, so I eventually just picked one.
And then the carpet was installed....and our feet thanked us.
And then we took all of the doors down and painted them, hung them back up and trimmed everything out.
I also spray painted the door handles - rustoleum hammered metal in black. We hope to get some new hardware down the road but for now the spray paint works.
I also painted the railing going down the stairwell.
The painting in the stairwell is from Urban Barn and used to hang in my office in the old house.
We still need a new light and I really need to figure out something for the thermostats. Why are they always in the middle of a wall??? We have one really old one that's for the humidifier and then a brand new one that came with our security system (that I can control from my phone...for when we are too lazy or cold to get out of bed!).
We sprayed the doors using our Critter sprayer. It made the whole job really fast and easy. We had enough room in the garage to do 2 doors at a time, so we just sort of worked our way around the hallway. Living without a bathroom door for a few days was interesting.
The trim was by far the most time consuming part of the project. There are still a few small places that we need to finish off, and I still need to go around and fill in all of the gaps and holes and then apply a second coat of paint. I am convincing myself that it will be easier to the do the whole house at once, but I am not sure if that's really true. So for now, we have nail holes everywhere.
At the end of the hallway I hung my 3 Lucy Snowe bison prints that used to be in our old living room. (If you love them and want some of your own, they are still listed in Lucy's shop.)
I went through about 10 options for art at the end of the hall, but I am really happy with the prints. They are neutral enough to go with the rooms on either side, but they still have a bit of impact.
The inside of each door is white, and then I painted the edges of the doors all different colours to match the interior of the rooms.
You saw the bathroom a couple of weeks ago.
I painted the door to our master bedroom the same colour as the walls, but I am thinking of adding a bit of gold to it too - maybe stripes or dots.
I have to admit, painting the edge was just sort of fun. Something a bit unexpected.
So there you go! Phew - I wasn't expecting a post about doors to be so long.
As a reference, the paint colours are:
Doors - Benjamin Moore Baby Seal Black (Advance Interior Pearl)
Trim - Benjamin Moore Simply White (Advance Interior Pearl)
Walls: Benjamin Moore Baby Fawn (Ben Interior Eggshell)
What do you think? Are you a fan of the dark interior doors? It's ok if you aren't - everyone is entitled to their opinion :)
Have a great day.
Youve done a great job!
ReplyDeleteThank you :)
DeleteYour doors look great and yes, Im a fan of darker interior doors!! I like how you painted the edge different too. What do they say, "every room needs a touch of whimsy" well, I think that would be it!
ReplyDeletelooking good! i need to do this in my house.... one day. ugh. hate painting doors.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty colour combo with the walls, trim and doors!
ReplyDeleteI love painted doors! theyre just so chic. And those buffalo prints were too cute :)
ReplyDeleteI looooove the painted doors. I would totally do it, but Hubs would probably not like me very much. lol You know they always say the man needs his "man cave"? Well, I always tell Hubs that Im the one that needs a WOman cave, that way I can decorate it however I want and he gets no say! =]

Yes, I usually reply to comments. When you comment it isnt attached to an email, so I cant hit reply....which I why I reply here.
DeleteI love it so much. Ive been wanting to paint our interior doors black for so long. But Aaron keeps refusing, because he thinks it would look good from the hallway but horrible from inside the rooms. I disagree. Yours look amazing. Maybe I can twist his arm a little harder :)
ReplyDeleteIt doesnt look bad at all inside the rooms...you should just do it one day :) The trick is keeping the inside of the door white, so when its closed from inside it doesnt look strange.
DeleteThis looks so awesome - I love the white trim with dark doors. Its like a new space! Awesome work!
ReplyDeletelove them! And I love how that inside strip is painted a different color for each door--quirky fun! Interested to hear how the painted door knobs hold up over time...Im going back and forth between painting and replacing some of mine right now
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of dark, interior doors. Im in the process of figuring out new paint colors for our VERY outdated bathroom and I am leaning heavily on painting the door a deep rich cranberry
ReplyDeleteOh, that would be a really pretty colour. Do it!
DeleteThey look great Kelly, and yes Im a big fan! Love the fun paint detail on the edge, too!
ReplyDeleteI am loving those bison pictures... and the color looks great! such an improvement.
ReplyDeleteI have a question for ya! Have you ever used paint and primer in one? If so, does it work? Have you used it to cover a darker wall with a lighter paint color? When we first bought our house we bought a five gallon bucket of primer and thats almost out. Im wondering if its worth it to start getting paint and primer in one, or if we should just continue with the separate prime and paint technique. Thanks for your help!

Yes, I have used the paint and primer in one. I think Ive used only the Behr brand though - and BM Aura - which they say is also a primer. I only use primer when its a light colour going over a dark colour or when you need it for adhesion. I usually use primer because its cheaper than the paint, so its better to buy one can of cheap primer and one can of paint instead of 2 cans of paint. But, that being said, the Behr ultra is really thick and Id think it would cover most things
DeleteIs there a way I can attach an email to my comments to be sure I get all responses? I follow a few blogs that have the same comment system as you, and Im totally bummed now that I realize Im probably missing tons of replies! =[
DeleteThanks for the tip on priming! The majority of our walls are darker colors that we are painting over with a light color, so I think Ill just stick to priming separate from 2-in1 paints.

I am a fan of the dark doors! So chic. You really improved the look of the hallway.
ReplyDeleteLooks great! I really love your moldings too!
ReplyDeleteI love the pops of colors on the edge of the doors...so fun! :) Ive seen some cool ideas for hiding thermostats under hinged canvases- I want to do something like that once we have our walls up and drywalled and textured....hahaha one day.
ReplyDeleteI really love the idea of painting the door edges! Such a great idea. Ive never seen that before. Cool!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE the doors! Especially the edges. And I think a gold stripe or dots would be spectacular!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I have yet do to the dots, but I really think I am going to!
DeleteI love the trim. Can you post more about it with more pictures?
